All the touching, feeling, and peeking going on at our airports these days brought on a rash of discussions about our rights as individual citizens. “Don’t touch my junk,” made us finally ask, “What’s up with this?”
Let’s see, young Middle Eastern Arab men killed 3000 people on 9/11. Young Middle Eastern Arab men attempted a massacre at Fort Dix. A young Middle Eastern Arab man massacred people at Fort Hood. Another young Middle Eastern Arab man got on a plane with a bomb in his underwear. And still another young Middle Eastern Arab man attempted to car bomb Time Square.
I finally see the logic for feeling and x-raying all Americans. You never know. One of those passengers may be hiding a young Middle Eastern Arab man!
But since we’re on the topic of the rights of Americans, perhaps we ought to look at who made that argument in the first place. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence that founded our government on the case of a created order. In the “Created Order” people’s rights are a gift from God. The state has the responsibility to protect the citizens’ lives but the state can only go as far as the citizens consent.
I guess that means that We The People could actually abolish the TSA. Not to worry. The current generation doesn’t even know what the Declaration of Independence says. So what possible meaning can the life and times of Thomas Jefferson have for us today?
Airport screening lines and the TSA mess in our airports are a result of the Islamic jihad against Americans. It’s our reaction to them and now we’re paying out billions from our treasury to the TSA that’s not killing a single enemy jihadi. It’s ransom for our security. What possible guidance could Thomas Jefferson ever give us about that? He came from a totally different world. Or did he?
Actually not, there was a slight problem in Jefferson’s day of the alliance of the Islamic Barbary States of North Africa. Their allied navies assaulted and kidnapped thousands of American citizens on commercial ships and sold these Americans as slaves in Islamic nations. So the first wave of Islamic terror against Americans began 227 years ago after America signed the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War in 1783.
President George Washington sent Thomas Jefferson and John Adams to London in 1785 to meet Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman representing the Barbary Muslims States. He told them that according to both Muhammad and the Koran it was their Islamic right and duty to make war upon American unbelievers wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners.[i] That’s no different than The 9/11 Commission Report published in 2004.
Since America didn’t have a substantial navy, the United States decided to pay tribute and ransom to the Barbary States as protection. Disappointed in their policy Jefferson wrote to John Adams July 11, 1786 saying, “It would be best to effect a peace through the medium of war. Paying tribute will merely invite more demands.”
Five years later on May 13, 1791 Secretary of State Jefferson told the American consul in Morocco, “It is lastly our determination to prefer war in all cases to tribute under any form, and to any people whatever.”[ii] On December 26, 1786, Jefferson wrote, “It will be more easy to raise ships and men to fight these pirates into reason.”
When Jefferson became president in 1801 he refused Tripoli’s demands for an immediate payment of ransom for kidnapped American sailors. Instead he sent The United States Navy to blockade their ports and sink their ships.
The life and times of Thomas Jefferson are extremely relevant today. Jefferson proved that resources spent for protection money never worked. Taking the battle to the enemies’ homeland did.
We also need to remember that our nation’s battles with the Barbary Islamists lasted fifteen years from 1801 until 1815. President Jefferson’s successor, James Madison, finished it with The United States Navy’s victories by Commodores William Bainbridge and Stephen Decatur that led to treaties ending all tribute payments by the United States in 1815.
If Jefferson wouldn’t pay tribute for safety why should we make a lifestyle of it? Instead, we should follow Jefferson’s example as well as his advice, “Paying tribute will merely invite more demands…our determination (is) to prefer war in all cases to tribute under any form.”
After all, Thomas Jefferson not only wrote the Declaration of Independence, he enforced it as the third President of the United States. His example to us…send the Navy and the Marines after the Islamists until it’s finished, and don’t lose heart even if it takes fifteen years.

This is a great article! I had never heard of the Barbary pirates and how Thomas Jefferson had dealt with the problem. He had the right idea that we do not need to be reactive to this type of tyranny and terrorism but proactive. We have seen that throughout history the only thing that can stop these terrorists acts is a show of force. We need to follow our founding father’s lead and say enough is enough.
